LO3 - Be able to carry out a specific production role for a chosen media production

Task 4

I undertook the role of a camera operator while making my short film 'Suicide' in unit 41. In this role I was filming from different locations using different shots and angles so it would fit the genre so therefore by doing dark and gloomy effects from the camera. Also in the pre-production process I was creating the treatments, risk assessments, recces, storyboards etc. Therefore I was making sure we had all our equipment, carrying them from one location to the other.

These are my storyboards I created before I undertook my role as a camera operator.

This is a production schedule for the actors showing what scene and what location we will be filming, the actors and props we will be using, the date and time we will be shooting, and therefore if we are on schedule or not. A production schedule is very useful as it is set out conveniently and is a easy way to use.

This is a recce sheet I created for the Endcliffe Park Woods. This is imperative as it shows all the background information and risks involved in the location.

This is evidence of me doing the edit decion list. Creating this edit decision list helped me edit my film quicker and efficiently.

M3
In this production I undertook additional tasks to ensure the film would become successful. For example I was communicating with the actors numerous times to make sure they knew exactly what they were doing, if they understood the script etc. Therefore I had to ask permission off Cafe Nero workers to ensure if we could film in this public place. I also took part in editing the film and added extra visual effects to fit the thriller genre of the film.

I made extensive contribution to the team by spending most of my free time working on editing the film as my team had other work to do. I spent my hours adding different techniques, effects and transitions with also effective sounds to ensure our film would become successful and achieve the high grade we want.

LO2 - Understand the skills they will need to carry out a chosen media production role

Camera Operator
The camera operator is the production role which starts at the end of pre-production which I have chosen. As a camera operator I am responsible for all aspects of a camera operation and there are many key responsibilities in this role such as; choosing the right lighting, setting up equipment, picking the right lens for each shot, where to position and the movement of the camera.

Written communication
I have a lot of experience with written communication. I myself have my own blog and constantly write all my work on there for all my units such as unit 11, unit 14, unit 41 e.t.c. Having a blog is a good way to show people my work as they could be interested. For unit 41 I made a short film called 'Suicide?' in a group of 3, during this there was written communication involved such as making storyboards, treatments, risk assessments e.t.c. Therefore I emailed the actors to organize dates and make arrangements of when to film, this is a major aspect of a camera operator as things can get disorganised.

Verbal communication
Verbal communication is a major skill as it is imperative to communicate with members and actors from the production. During the production of making my film 'Suicide?' everyone had to work together. Teamwork is key as while making my film everyone had different ideas, so then while having meetings we all exchanged and shared our ideas to make one final solution, furthermore to make our film successful.
Therefore as a camera operator I have been communicating with the actors to show them what facial expressions to do and where to stand as they may not understand the script very well. Moreover I have been a camera operator at many events such as on work experience in London. When assuming this role, it is important to communicate with people, as I was talking to people and asking questions to keep them company and enganged, also asking if they would want to be filmed as as some people may not want to be filmed.

Practical production
A major aspect of a camera operator is practical production as I had to put forward my creative skills and technical knowlege. When filming I have been transporting all the equipment and setting it all up from different locations. Also I have been creating the storyboards, treatments e.t.c. during pre-production, this is very useful as it will help me in the future. Therefore I have been using Premiere to edit the videos I have been filming. This is very useful as I will be doing this in the future.

Creativity
Being a camera operator you need to have creativity due to knowing the different camera angles, shots SFX effects etc, so for this job role you need to have technical skills. During the production of making my film I experimented on different camera shots and angles to make it fit the genre. For example filming mostly close up shots of the actors as I think it shows more of their facial expressions which connotes that they are scared which fits our chosen style, horror.


M2 Gaps
During my production I noticed a skill I need to improve on. I personally think I need to manage my time more proficiently as I think I was rushing and doing different things at once. For example while editing I was also finishing off some posts from my blog such as risk assessments.

My action plan

I plan to help develop my skills so that I don't have any gaps. To ensure I do not have any gaps I will follow my production schedule and meeting minutes and make it easier for me to track. I need to be careful with managing my times as it becomes very difficult later in the production.

Here I created a shooting schedule of when to shoot each scene, what actors are needed, the date and time and if I was on schedule. Creating this really helped me to work my time more efficiently knowing I can get other things done aswell. Therefore this made me develop my skills and improved my written communication.
